Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE)
The Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) is a sports performance that provides a structured training and development route for talented young athletes (aged 16-19), who have a real chance of excelling in their sport; either by competing on the world stage or securing a professional contract. The programme length varies depending on the sport but can be from 6 months to 24 months.
The AASE framework: AASE is a combination of three different types of learning:
The NVQ: on-the-job performance-based qualification
The Technical Certificate: students need to be enrolled on a Level 3 BTEC programme or A levels
Functional skills: Communication and Numeracy at Level 2
You will also receive a minimum of 12 hours of athletic development contact time each week within the programme delivered by nationally respected coaches, conditioners and physiotherapists, who understand the pressures facing elite players. This will be factored into your academic timetable.
The delivery and assessment of the NVQ in Achieving Sporting Excellence are bespoke to National Governing Bodies and can be blended in to naturally occurring evidence created from current training and competition programmes, support services, workshops or education programmes.
The NVQ programme may add or further develop talent development initiatives and allow performers to access services that they would not be able to otherwise, including:
1. Career planning & managing your finances
2. Sports injuries and health & safety
3. Nutrition and performance
4. Psychological demands of your sport
5. Dealing with the media and communication skills
6. Lifestyle and performance
- Three individual sessions with psychologist
- Three individual sessions with nutritionist
- Coach reviews and assessment
Additional sports science support, coaching and/or training camps negotiated with the individual and NGB.
As well as accessing support for performers and National Governing Bodies, the NVQ in Achieving Excellence in Sport is a Level 3 NVQ qualification that can add to a performer’s CV and add to progression towards secondary careers.
Selection criteria: Selection on to the AASE programme is determined by your status within your sport. To be eligible for selection you will meet the national ranking criteria.
